During one of our Tuesday morning prayer calls, someone shared a concept that struck deeply. It was one of "bold humility." It’s an almost paradoxical idea. We are to be bold in faith but remaining humble. Scripture tells us that God resists the proud but embraces the humble, and our goal is to become "irresistible" to Him through this bold humility. In a noisy, chaotic world, that tells us we must keep our elbows up, we say it is better to keep our knees down.

Romans 15 speaks directly to this humility. In verse 5, God is described as the God of endurance and encouragement, qualities that enable us to live in harmony and humility with one another. As we embrace this endurance and encouragement, we reflect God’s glory. In verse 13, Paul prays that the God of hope will fill believers with joy, peace, and abounding hope through the Holy Spirit. All of these qualities are cultivated in the secret place. We spend time on our knees before God, humbling ourselves to receive His presence. It is there, in that place of bold humility, that we are shaped and empowered to reflect His love and bring peace to those around us.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 15:13

  • Pray for unity in our communities, especially in a time of division and conflict, that we may live in harmony with one another, overcoming differences and building bridges of peace and understanding.

  • Pray for the ability to find time in the busyness of life to draw near to God in the secret place, that we would humbly seek His presence and allow Him to fill us with His peace and wisdom.
