You are not a persistent widow!

For the past few weeks, we’ve been sharing encouragements about how we’re seeing answers to prayer in Canada, in an effort to encourage us all to stay on the wall and keep praying. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, so it’s helpful to hear reports of how God is moving in areas that we’re praying for.
Jesus shared a parable with a similar aim; Luke tells us the point of the parable was to help us pray and not lose heart. It’s the parable of the persistent widow, found in Luke 18:1-8. It’s a short, clear story: an unrighteous judge refuses to give this widow the justice she needs, but she is able to overcome him by her persistence. That’s where the parable ends, but it’s not Jesus’ final word on the topic.
Jesus adds, “will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night?” (v.7). Here’s the point He’s making: you are not a persistent widow, and God is not an unrighteous judge. You’re His elect. He’s already chosen you. He’s already picked you; you love Him because He loved you first (1 Jn. 4:19). You don’t have to overwhelm Him, because you already have.
A key to persistent prayer is to remember who you are (beloved), and who God is (good). You don’t have to strive to overcome a reluctant heart. You’ll actually find that He is quite willing. You are not a persistent widow, you are betrothed to His only begotten Son. You can pray from that posture!

Thank God for being the God of love (1 Jn. 4:8; Ex. 34:6-7); for choosing you (Jn. 15:16; Eph. 1:4), loving you (1 Jn. 4:19), dwelling in you by the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:14-17; Eph. 1:13-14, seating you with Christ in heavenly places (Eph. 1:3; 2:6), and for already giving you everything you need for life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3).
Thank Him for how you’ve seen Him answer prayer in the past, and how you’re seeing Him move today (1 Thess. 5:16-18).
Pray for leaders - elected officials and anyone in positions of authority in your life - that they would see and know God, and that they would approve things that are excellent and allow people to flourish (1 Tim. 2:1-4; Phil. 1:9-11).
Pray that the Church in Canada would be strengthened with might by the Holy Spirit in the inner man, to be rooted & grounded in the love of God and experiencing it in its fullness (Eph. 3:16-19).
Pray that the Church would have grace to always pray and never lose heart (Lk. 18:1).
