Government bans Name of God in military. Now what?

Saturday, August 15, 2026

A few weeks ago, the government announced plans to ban prayer and the name of God from armed forces ceremonies. This goes against Canadian culture as faith has been a long part of the military and the Charter itself acknowledges the supremacy of God.

Our first instinct might be anger, but we must use the tools we have. Here is an opportunity to build a real relationship with your MP. A face to face conversation carries more weight than an email, and summer is the perfect time to catch them as they are working in their constituencies.

Of course, we cannot stop praying. Acts 4:29 asks God for boldness in the face of pushback. This is definitely worth praying for chaplains right now and ask God to perform miracles just like they did in Acts.

On July 26, fifteen churches gathered in Ottawa to worship, and the Prime Minister and his wife were invited. The Pastors were able to spend time speaking and praying with Mr. Carney. Clearly, God is moving quietly in the hearts of our leaders.

So keep building that relationship with your MP; let them know you're praying for them, and don't get discouraged.

"Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

Acts 4:29-30

Weekly Prayer Points

  • Pray for chaplains serving in the armed forces, that they would speak with boldness and remain unashamed of their faith, even under pressure to stay silent.

  • Pray for government leaders, that they would receive wisdom and revelation to know Him.

  • Pray for believers in every riding to build genuine relationships with their MPs this summer while they're home in their constituencies, that real friendships would form so truth can be shared with boldness and love. Pray too that MPs with families would enjoy meaningful time together, strengthening their bonds over the summer.

"Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,"

Colossians 3:12

 Continue to:

  • Pray for those affected by Canada's wildfires, now one of the worst seasons on record, with over 800 fires burning nationwide and more than 3 million hectares lost. Pray especially for First Nations communities, who make up a disproportionate share of the displaced. Pray for rain, relief for exhausted emergency crews, and safety for those still at risk in BC, northwestern Ontario, and the Northwest Territories.

  • Pray for the Middle East, where the war between Israel, the US, and Iran continues with no clear end in sight. Pray for a just and lasting peace, for protection over civilians in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran, and for the church in the region to have boldness and open doors to share the gospel even amid conflict.

  • Pray for Canada's ongoing relationships with allies, including the US and Israel, especially as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Iran conflict continue to shift.

  • Pray for Jewish communities across Canada as antisemitic incidents continue to rise sharply this year. Pray for protection and peace following the recent shooting and vandalism at Toronto's Kiva's Bagel Bar and the suspected arson at Montreal's Nöam kosher restaurant, and for justice and clarity as police continue their investigations.
