The heart of the Advent season centres on hope, peace, joy, and love, echoing Romans 15:13 and the promise that God fills His people with these gifts, and remembering that the Kingdom of God is marked by righteousness, peace, and joy. The “love chapter” (1 Corinthians 13) reminds us that without love, even the greatest gifts like eloquence, faith, generosity, and sacrifice mean nothing. Love never gives up, cares more for others than for itself, doesn’t strut or insist on its own way, doesn’t keep score or delight in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth, trusts God always, looks for the best, and keeps going to the end. In this Advent season, let us put on love and live with a posture that “hopes all things.”
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Bill C-9 - Combating Hate Act
The Criminal Code currently exempts hate speech made in good faith on religious subjects or texts.
This week, the House of Commons justice committee adopted a Bloc Québécois amendment to the Liberals’ Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, that would remove the exemption. The Conservatives oppose the bill and amendment. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said the change could affect how religious texts are interpreted. Religious groups, including Catholic and Muslim organizations, have raised concerns about the proposed changes.
The amendment is not yet law. Bill C-9 must still pass third reading in the House of Commons after it completes committee review. If it passes - likely, given support from the Bloc Québécois - it will move on to the Senate. At that point, the Senate could return the bill to the House for further consideration, as it must approve the legislation in the exact form passed by the House of Commons.
