Bill C-314 is an act that seeks to reverse the latest offering on the table for MAiD – Medical Assistance in dying. If passed, mental disorder would no longer be an eligibility to receive MAiD. The preamble of the act encourages proper supports be in place for Canadians with mental health issues and that suicide prevention counselling be the first consideration over access to medical assistance in dying.
MP Ed Fast introduced this bill in February of 2023. It received second reading this passed Thursday October 5th. The House of Commons does not sit next week. They will return to Ottawa on October 16th and a vote is scheduled regarding this bill on the 18th.
Please reach out to your Members of Parliament. Thank them for their hard work in representing their constituents in the riding. Urge them to back bill C-314 to demonstrate our commitment to not abandoning individuals with mental health challenges by assuming their situation is without hope. Encourage them to endorse increased assistance for these fellow Canadians and prioritize suicide prevention counseling over the choice of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).
Pray that MP's would have their eyes opened regarding this bill. Pray that they would see the wisdom in choosing supports, counselling and life over death.
Pray again for the courage many of these MP's will need to vote against their party narrative. Pray that the desire to help their constituents exceeds the fear of reprisal for not towing party lines.
Pray that our Members of Parliament would walk in Wisdom and understanding. Pray that they would be empowered, strengthened and inspired to do what is right.
