hi i'm brad fidler with the national house of prayer and just want to share a couple thoughts with you uh today this advent season one of the most well-known prophecies about jesus coming is found in isaiah 9 where the prophet says unto us a child is born and unto us a son is given and the government will be upon his shoulders and his name will be wonderful counselor almighty god everlasting father and prince of peace and of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end and i've been thinking this christmas season about jesus and how he came as a baby obviously we think about that this season the the mystery of the incarnation uh that god would put on flesh and come

as a helpless fragile infant um and yet in that passage isaiah points out that the son this child that was born was destined to be a king the government will rest on his shoulders and i've been i've been approaching jesus this this christmas season as as the one who came to be a king and i've been contrasting it in my own heart with psalm 2 which is a messianic psalm and it opens with why do the nations rage and the people plot a vain thing the rulers of the earth they take their stand and they counsel together against the lord and against his anointed saying let us break their bonds and pieces and cast their chains away from us it's this this thing of we don't want anything to do with

with god with his son with his ways we want to do what we want to do and that's just been striking me these last few days just this we see it in the in the world today just this this trending away from uh in in general is trending away from uh the ways of god and verses four to six god's response to it is he kind of kind of scoffs at it but there's he he ends with this statement it says he will distress them the rulers of the earth he'll distress them in his deep displeasure with this statement yet i have set my king on my holy hill of zion he's saying i have chosen my king i've set him in place and nothing and no one is going to overthrow him and uh so i've just i've been i've been in that

place seeing the the the push to to be against god in these days in a number of ways and yet we have this statement from the father this promise that i've set my king on my holy hill of zion and in thinking of that i go to philippians where paul kind of unpacks the justification for christ being said as king where he says jesus though by very nature was god he didn't consider equality with god something to be grasped which is interesting because equality with god is what lucifer was seeking and he was kicked out of heaven equality with god is at the heart of what adam and eve were seeking and wanting to make their own calls and not submit to another but

to be the ones making the decisions and to know good the difference between good and evil to know uh to have the knowledge that that god alone at the time had and so uh there's this heart in man that we want to be in charge we want to do what we want to do we don't want to submit to another and yet jesus who by very nature is god he didn't consider that equality with god something to be held onto but he laid it aside he emptied himself and came as a servant and paul goes on to say because of that because he was obedient to the point of death even the death on the cross because of that the father has given him the name above every other name that at the name of jesus every knee will bow in

every tongue confess that he is lord jesus is the only one to not have been corrupted by power he had absolute power and he voluntarily laid it aside to come and not only to come and be with us but as he said in his own words the son of man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many and this christmas season i've just been thinking about that and of jesus coming to be a king and thinking this is the kind of king i can follow that i can trust and so i just encourage you this christmas season as you think of his coming as you think of the incarnation you think of baby jesus i think also of him as the king the one who came to be the king and uh

and yeah just to respond to him in that way so jesus we thank you again for coming we thank you for putting on flesh we thank you for being the word made flesh god tabernacling among us and lord we thank you that you have been set as a king on the holy hill of zion we thank you that you when you return you will be coming as king of kings and lord of lords and holy spirit we ask for grace in the season to say yes to jesus again to say yes to him with our trust our obedience our hope our faith would you help us would you make us willing volunteers in the day of your power would you raise up a body in canada who willingly and gladly say yes to you we ask this in jesus name amen
