hi there it's marilyn byberg director of the national house of prayer here in ottawa today i just want to take a look at the first chapter in joshua actually just the first eight verses and there's so much packed into joshua i would just recommend that you read it so here's a summary of the first seven verses because what i really want to focus on is verse eight so as we start chapter 1 of joshua we find that moses has died and now joshua is asked to take the israelites across the jordan into the promised land and god says that every place where their feet tread he's going to give that land to them in fact he even gives them a verbal map where they're going to occupy
so the promise is pretty specific he assures joshua that he would never leave him or forsake him and then twice in these verses he charges joshua to be strong and courageous and some translations will say bold and courageous he repeats this charge more times as we continue through the chapter but we're just going to focus on these first two times the first time he says to joshua to be bold and courageous he repeats the promise of the inheritance and then the second time he exhorts joshua to do all that moses had presented in the law so why does god keep repeating to be strong and courageous or bold and courageous so if we continue reading through the book we'll see that the israelites had
to fight for the promise they fought long and hard they even had to fight giants many times when god gives us a promise we have to fight for it so let's look at verse 8. this book of the law shall not depart from your mouth but you shall meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it for then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success he was giving them a tool to help them succeed and that is to meditate on his word day and night so they can be careful to do according to all that is in it and this same tool we can use so that we can have success in the promises that god has over our lives
meditate on his word day and night it seems pretty clear that this is a recipe for success the word for meditate here is the same word used in isaiah 31 4 for growl some translations will say we'll use the word roar so i'm going to read isaiah 31 4 just the first bit of it to you as a lion growls a great line over its prey and though a wide no though a whole band of shepherds is called together against it it is not frightened by their shouts or disturbed by their clamor the lion is hungry he has found a prey and no band of shepherds is gonna frighten him away instead he roars or growls over his prayers it to say this is mine and nothing is going to keep me from it in the same way
we are to hold on to the word of god no matter what tries to get in between we will let our hunger and our desire for the word and our uh need of the word we're gonna let that rule we're gonna growl over it and we're going to fight for it this meditate is not passive it is an active taking of the word into us and it's continual because it says to do it night and day or day and night so let me encourage you to hold on to the word meditate on it day and night don't let anything get in the way don't let your busy schedule get in the way make time for the word read it again and again memorize it study it until it becomes alive in you so i'm just going to pray now father i thank you for your word
thank you that it is the written expression of jesus lord we pray for a love of your word to overwhelm us we want your word to become alive in us lord and father we pray that you make us bold and courageous so that we would dare to believe in the power of your word in jesus name we pray amen thank you so much for listening it's maryland at the national house of prayer we'll see you again soon
