hi there it's marilyn biber director at the national house of prayer in ottawa today i just want to talk to you a little bit about the conservative leadership race and some of the rules that apply around that so you all probably know that the election for this race is going to take place on september the 10th and that if you want to vote you have to be a conservative party member so to become a conservative party member you first of all have to be a canadian citizen or a permanent resident you have to pay the required fee which is 15 per year from your own personal funds and you cannot hold a membership with any other canadian federal political party also you need to be 14 years of age or

older on june the 3rd so membership purchase memberships purchased or renewals made online with your credit card can be done at www.conservative.ca and all of these memberships that are in by 11 59 eastern time on june the 3rd 2022 will be eligible to vote any other membership submissions like through the mail will have to be two conservative headquarters by june the 3rd 2022 at 5 00 pm eastern time you can find those membership forms and the address where you need to send your checks at www.conservative.ca now if you are have a membership but you have moved it's important that you again www conservative that you go there and you update your mailing address because they're going to

mail the ballots to you and if they don't have the proper address they're going to mail it to the wrong place so it's important that you update your mailing address so now once you've become a member you will be associated with the writing that you live in there are 338 federal writings or electoral districts in canada so each electoral district will be allocated 100 points or one point per vote cast whichever is less leadership candidates will be assigned a point total based on their percentage of the vote in each electoral district so this is not based on a percentage of the total number of votes but rather point totals calculated for each electoral district separately and to win

a candidate must receive over 50 percent of the points the conservative party also uses a ranked ballot to select their leaders so instead of choosing one candidate you're going to rank your your preferences in order from most preferred to least preferred when they count the first when they make that first uh first set of first votes that they count if there's no winner in the first round that means that nobody has reached more than 50 percent then that last place candidate is eliminated and everyone who ranked that candidate as their first choice then has their ballots counted again with the second place rankings tallied instead the process of knocking out the last

place candidate and reallocating votes continues until one of the candidates crosses the 50 mark thereby winning the leadership race stephen harper did win in the first round of his candidacy with 56 but that didn't happen in the last two leadership races in 2020 it the it was the third round before we saw aaron o'toole edge peter mckay out and in for andrew shear it took it went to 13 rounds which was the final round and he won over the front runner maxine bernier by just under 51 percent of the points as you can see not only isn't is it important to vote but it is very important to rank your ballot in the last two leadership races it was that second ranked vote that really helped to seek

to help to choose a winner today there are six candidates now declared well today there are only six candidates there won't be anymore declared and confirmed for the conservative party leadership race and they are in alphabetical order scott agentson roman barber patrick brown jean-charay leslie lewis and pierre polyeff there have been two debates so far and they're going to be more there was already an english language debate that was party sanctioned there will be a french language debate coming up on may the 25th um and i'm sure they're going to be more unofficial debates uh the party may also have another one in early august you can find past debates on youtube so what we recommend

is that you learn as much about these candidates as you can prior to voting watch all the debates look at commentary from all news sources not just the legacy media the candidates are traveling across the country so if possible you may want to go and hear what they have to say it's vital as we as christians receive the mind of god as to who we are to choose we must prayerfully consider our choices in saying this now let me pray father i pray that the hearts our hearts will remain aligned with your heart for our nation that as we now are needing to choose a new leader for the conservative party that we would not take this lightly although i pray that our voting would be responsible and

informed i pray that our choice would ultimately be the one that will do the best job and that um the leader that we choose would not only have powerfulness of wisdom but he also would have he or she would have a character of humility honesty courage and integrity in jesus name thank you lord thank you everyone for listening it's marilyn biber director of the national house of prayer we'll see you again soon bye-bye
