June 2018 Prayer Points

from the

National House of Prayer

"Wickedness never brings stability, but the godly have deep roots."

- Proverbs 12:3

"When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily. But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability." - Proverbs 28:2

"A just king gives stability to his nation, but one who demands bribes destroys it." - Proverbs 29:4

The book of Proverbs provides wisdom and even recognizes 'best practices' and advice to those who have authority in the highest offices of a nation. These verses provide us with a focus as we pray for Canada and our leaders.

Last week, the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) released its long-awaited decision regarding Trinity Western University's (TWU) proposed law school. While the law school had received accreditation from the law societies of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, accreditation was denied by the law societies of British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia. TWU took them all to court, and the cases in BC and Ontario went all the way to the Supreme Court. On Friday (June 15th), the SCC released its decision, in which it sided with the law societies, effectively shutting down TWU's dream of opening a law school.

The details are long and somewhat complicated but there is no questioning the fact that loss was devastating to TWU and sent shock waves through Canada's Christian community. Much debate amongst legal experts is sure to follow, as Canada now tries to untangle another SCC decision which creates uncertainty about the extent of religious freedom in Canada. We are not going to try and unpack this important issue in this small space. Rather, we want to call you to pray for pastors and Christian leaders across the nation (if you want more background information on the TWU cases, go herehere or here).

  1. Pray for Trinity Western University, that they would be strengthened and encouraged after this discouraging news.

  1. Pray that rather than shrinking back, the church in Canada would be emboldened to witness of Christ without apology.

  1. Pray that church leaders and pastors would not shrink from teaching the clear truths of scripture, but would be as wise as serpents and as innocent as doves.

  1. Pray for divine strategies to move forward and impact our nation with the gospel.

  1. Pray for a great revival to break out amongst the LGTBQ community, transforming their hearts and lives and impacting the nation.

  1. Pray  that the church would would respond with compassion toward the broken, while not compromising the truth of God's word.

  2. Pray that a hunger for holiness would arise in the church, that we would lead with our lifestyle and not just with words.

Canada has been thrust into a renegotiation of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The outcome of these NAFTA negotiations will have a significant impact on both Canada and the USA (as well as Mexico). A good trade agreement will facilitate economic health and growth for both countries, whereas a bad agreement or a trade war brings warnings of economic downturn and recession.

  1. Pray for the Honourable Chrystia Freeland and the team negotiating the agreement.

  1. Pray that Canada would be honorable and have strong integrity as they pursue the best possible outcome.

  1. Pray for patience for everyone to take the time to get the agreement right.

While we may at times find ourselves disagreeing with decisions made by our Prime Minister, it is imperative that we intercede on his behalf and cover his cabinet and his family in prayer.

  1. Pray for our Prime Minister to seek wise and knowledgeable counsel on important issues facing this government including NAFTA, illegal migrants and pipeline development.

  1. Pray that the eyes of his heart would be open to the truth of gospel, and that he would have a revelation of the kindness and goodness of God, leading to his salvation.

  1. Pray for the safety, security and health of our Prime Minister and his family.

Both the Senate and the House of Commons will be adjourning for the summer this week. Let's cover our leaders in prayer during this time.

  1. Pray for strength and endurance as MPs and Senators finish off the session and have put in many long days and late nights.

  1. Pray for staffers as well, as they have been putting in long hours supporting their MPs and Senators through this very busy time.

  1. Pray that the summer would be a restful time where MPs would have quality time to connect with their families and their communities.
